Dear parents,
Happy Chinese New Year! Thank you again for the parents who provided snacks on Friday. We had a fun activity in the morning performing a parade in every classroom and followed by a lunch party.
We've started the Native American Unit last week and will continue to explore the different regions and traditions for the following weeks. There are few projects students will do at school. One of them is making a rain caller. Please bring a bag of uncooked rice, bean or corn to school on Monday or Tuesday. We will mix them together to create a "rain" sound. I also brought a recorder for each student as a gift so that we can learn and play some songs.
Then we will start the Black History unit in February. Students will conduct research and read various people and events to celebrate Black History Month and the Civil Rights Movement.
In Language Arts, we are going to concentrate on the test prep for the IAB (In February) and the SBAC (May). Please make sure your child is reading 20 minutes a day at home. It is the most vital task and must practice every day.
In Math, we are continuing to investigate number patterns in division and subtraction as well as the relationship between division and multiplication. Although they are not required to memorize the multiplication table, I do recommend that students practice the drills at home. We will start the Fraction Unit in February.
In Science, we will review the Ecosystem and Sustainability that we learned before the Winter Break and will continue to explore the Life Science in animal and plant kingdoms. There will be lots of experiences and I will send home more information later.
Lastly, please remind your child that their concentration and behaviors are one of the key determinations of their success at school. Our schedule will be tighter and lots more rigorous. The test prep is important and the score will follow them until high school. I will make it fun, but they must follow directions and have a growth mindset. Your encouragement and supports are vital and I believe all of them are capable of reaching their full potential!
